Need to replace the headers on my sons 77 f-150, 351M 4x4. Any advise or recomendations as far as brand to look for? Hopefully ones that need no blacksmithing to install, been down that road and don't want to go there!!
I got dynomax headers from jegs.com, the full length ones that are not cermaic coated. They are pretty cheap. I wanted the ceramic ones but they wouldnt come close to fitting due to the front driveshaft. Got some [greasy] pics in my gallery.
I had a set of heddmans on my truck. They went on easy but they rusted through in a couple of years. I should have stopped being cheap and got the coated ones. If your son spends alot of time in mud and/or water get a set of ceramic coated. I wish I did.
I have a horror story about ordering headers from the AutopartsWarehouse/PitStop/blah/blah/blah, same group of crooks.
I eventually ended up getting a replacement set of Hedman Hedders from Jegs and have been very pleased, just something basic (about $150-ish for my 1974/360 engine).
I agree with Mach1s. The Headman Elite series is also built from thicker 14ga tubing, where most others use thinner 16 or 18ga steel. When it comes to headers, it's probably a good idea to spend a few more bucks on a good quality set instead of buying cheap ones every few years. You'll save more in the long run. I plan to buy a set of Elites for my truck soon.
Has anyone had any fitment problems with the Elite's? I plan on getting better headers whenever I get closer to building up the rig. Like I said above, I actually had a set of ceramic coated ones bolted on the motor but couldnt put my front driveshaft back on. I even talked to dynomax and they were kinda stumped. Maybe my front axle isnt stock or something? Anyways, I assume the fitment between a 4x4 f150 is the same as a bronco (78-9)?
I have the Hedman Elites sitting on a shelf waiting for me to rebuild my 400 (same as a 351M). A friend used them in his 79 4x4 and never has had a problem. They have been on there for about 4 yrs., I'm guessing.
