Lightbulb Trick'd Out

I'm working through plans for overhaulin' my truck and thought it might be cool to start a thread about some of the more ingeneous things we've done with our trucks. We talk a lot about engines and trannies and suspensions. What are some of the more trick things you've seen on trucks?

One of the things I've seen a few times with the early models--they put a modern stereo behind the speaker grate, and make the grate flip down for access, but otherwise you wouldn't know it was there.

Another trick--Saw a truck with a sub-dash. Wasn't a big deal in and of itself, but they guy had mounted heater vents in it, so that they dropped down when the heat/ac was turned on, but hid up in the dash when it was off.

Lights, sounds, accesories, what have you seen?

(unashamedly fishing for cool ideas)

I'll be installing a compact A/C-Heater System behind the dash w/ a SelectAire or after-market controler from the era, mounting a 10 CD cartridge CD Player w/ a seperate FM Receiver both inside a late '50s underdash mount FM converter (it's rather large because of the tubes) w/ a flip down faceplate for it, to intragrate w/ my original truck radio, I've also an after-market underdash mount Refridgerator of the era that holds a 6-Pak & 2 sandwichs.

Wow! You could put six packs of Be-uh Soda in there! (Tommy Boy anyone?)

That's pretty cool.

I'm using a connecting rod out of an engine for my steering column drop, and my backup lights are hidden behind my roll pan.

I am thinking about a small mount for an Ipod. You can remove it and take it with you when you leave the truck. The Ipod would feed into a stereo amp for the speakers.

One less thing to mount in the small dash and one less thing for someone to steal.

Here's one I didn't think of at first...

I made a wooden dash plate to set my guages in. Levers behind the dash release the plate so the guages come forward and out. They're all electric, and I wired them through trailer harness pigtails for quick disconnect, and dummy proof reconnect. It gives me quick access to replace guage lights, and work with my wiper moter assembly, heater core, and fusebox. It's something no one would ever know to look at it, but it makes my truck a lot easier to work with. No more "over the seat, and through the wheel, down under the dash we go."

Something else I did was to hide all of my switches under the dash.

I'm not sure how "trick" this is, I made my own instrument cluster. I took an instrument cluster from a early 90's full sized GM van and fit them to the housing of my 49. I cut new acrylic as a face plate and the guage surround. It all came out pretty well and cost me less than $20. (pics in my "tightwad cluster" album)

Right now I am working to adapt the bed floor and front panel from a 2005 Ch**y to fit my bedsides.

I'm not a fan of puting non-Ford parts in a Ford, but I have to admit, that's pretty cool! Thumbs up man.

You don't need to trick anything out, that truck is gorgeous!! If I ever get mine looking even half that good I'll be happy.

Very nice!

Thanks bobby, My main plans are to update the drive train and creature comforts over the next few years. It took me a year just to do the cosmetic work on this truck, and a total re-wire, everything else was in pretty good shape. It's a long haul, that's never really over, but it is SO worth it.

Its looking really good!!
My truck was pretty well beat to he** when I got it. Thats why I decided to play around on the "darkside". If my truck were as clean as yours I would have kept it as close to original as possible while upgrading the driveability

LOL...I wouldn't know what to do if it were ever finished
