Okay I got ahold of a low mileage manual steering gear box. Now, do I have to replace the whole steering column or can I just replace one of the shafts? If so which one and is this difficult?
Matt, you should be able to just use the shaft. I changed out the whole column in my truck, so I can't advise on what you should expect, but others here post that it will work. :-)

Matt, You don't have a choice on the gear box. The difference is the power gear is longer on top where the fluid lines attach, so you have to have a shorter column shaft to compensate. To the best of my knowlege there are only two lengths of column shaft. One for ps, one for non.

[font color=red size=3]Yup, that's what I did to my '73 F100 2wd. I changed the center shaft in the column. Pull off the steering wheel and the shaft will slide out the other end...easy.
