hi...

538 is an error code "system failed to reconize brief WOT

NOTE:A brief snap of the throttle may not be sufficient to pass this test. Be sure to go to WOT and return.

Rerun Engine Running Self-Test. Be sure operator is familiar with the Engine Running format which proceeds as follows:

-- Activate Engine Running Self-Test.

-- Start engine.

-- ID Code start of test.

-- Dynamic Response code 1 (0); perform brief WOT.

-- Testing over.

-- DTC output begins.

* Is DTC 77 or 538 still present?

Yes
GO to «M2».

No
Dynamic Response Test passed.
SERVICE any other DTC(s) received as necessary.

---------------------------------------------------

173 i believe is an O2 sensor code. it's reading the gases are rich.

Here's the stuff to look at for this code. This info is from the manual

Possible Causes:

-- Fuel injectors.

-- HO2S.

-- Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system.

-- PCV/Hose.

-- Vacuum.

-- CANP.

-- MAP sensor.

-- Electronic Ignition Coil Failure.

* Key off.

* Remove the PCV valve from the valve cover. Inspect both rocker cover hole and PCV for damage, sludge build up, blockage and movement of valve plunger. Service as necessary.

* Run KOEO

Address any continuous ignition DTC's before servicing KOER DTCs.

* Start engine and let idle for two minutes minimum.

*NOTE:For a No Start GO directly to «H2».

* Run KOER «Quick Test».

* Are any of the above DTC's present in KOER Quick Test?

Yes
REINSTALL PCV valve.
GO to «H2».

No
For Continuous Memory DTC's 41/144, 91/139, 176 GO to «H2».
All Others:
CHANGE engine oil and filter.
REINSTALL PCV valve.
DRIVE vehicle 5 miles/55mph.
RERUN «Quick Test»

If the engine wasn't up to full operating temp it will make the hegos not read right.

pfogle,

I believe the computer ignores the O2 sensor until the motor is hot.

5.8L95f150,

Sorry if the procedures look wierd. I copied them from a CD manual. If can see if I can post the additional TS ladders.

Or pm me and I can send you the pages in pdf format.
