First time 302 buyer

My i6 finaly died at 477k and now I'm looking at a '95 with a 302. I know very little about these engines though. With good upkeep could I expect it to last another 100,000 with few problems or are the 8cylinders more work. The i6 I had was a solid engine that required very little maintnance. Any and all info is appreciated.

my 96 f150 has the 302 and hasnt given me any problems, its been a decent light duty truck engine. as far as work anything that new is gonna be more complicated then the good ole inline 6.

compaired to my 82 f100 with the inline 6, the 96 gets better mileage but its kindof a pain to do anything to it. a simple tuneup took 15 maybe 20 mins on the 82. where as it took me the better part of an afternoon to get the 96 done.

although the 82 is not what id call fast no matter what it was hauling or draging, it always chuged along at the same pace. the 302 pulls the 96 along fine, its never struggled with anything i was hauling.

the only thing my 96 has ever pulled was my old truck with a pull bar. through the city it wasnt struggling of the line but it was considerbly slower lugging the 82 from a stop light. on the highway with overdrive off doing 65 mph she hit just over 3700 rpms taking a hill besides that it never really had to scream to maintain speed.

i like my 302 for a daily driver. my truck is running 3.55s, a fresh tune up, true duals with no cats, a k@n air intake, and a bi passed smog pump. it gets up and goes pretty good.

yeah, the 302 is a solid engine for a small to midsized f-150. never had any prblems with my old 302 until i dove off into a mudhole that had way too much water. had almost 120,000 miles on it and all that leaked was the rear main seal.

The 302's are pretty reliable engines. My 79 302 has 244,000 miles and my 95 302 has 180,000 miles. If it's been well maintained and not abused, it should hold up for a long time. You did'nt mention what year the I6 was, if it had a carburetor, then the 95 would be more costly to repair if any of the fuel injection system parts were to go bad vs just the carb on the I6.
