...Yesterday I was part of a retirement ceremony for the man that was best man at my wedding. It was a great ceremony, everyone cried- mostly happy tears- and the ceremony went off without any problems at all. If you've never seen a military retirement, they are usually very happy events, with lots of memories, pictures, awards given out, and some tears, as well. My wife had a reading part in the ceremony, and she pulled it off without crying (which is rare for her) and she made the cake. I felt honored to be a part of this great sailor's send off. feel free to share your retirement memories... I, for one, plan to have a very small, informal affair. Just family and a few friends.
So far every naval retirement i have attended has touched me, as they mentored me some how. I wont be having a retirement, recruiting has soured me on the navy and i will be getting out when this is over.
Here's a link to the picture of the cake. My wife's first attempt at one this large- she's a fantastic cook, but had never made a cake this large. It was about 24" x 18" (8 boxes of cake mix- yes she makes them from scratch as well, but usually only for us at home) She did the writing on it freehand, and found the navy emblem for the middle- it's edible, too.

I retired from the Navy 26 years ago. It was a ceremony I will never forget. I am still in contact with many of the great friends I met during my 20 years in the Navy.
