sounds like a lifter. I pulled the valve cover started it to see witch one or three it was and it didnt make the tapping noise.Being the investigator I am I pulled a rocker arm off to ''have a look'' Well I didnt see much so I put it back together ,coverd it all up and the tapping quit.Four days later it started again. So I dont know if I should pull the cover every four days or what.
How many miles on it?
Has the oil been changed regularly?
I'm wondering if you have a lifter that's sticking occasionally. It might be a good idea to try running some engine purge through it and then changing the oil and see what happens. The engine purge goes in the oil, you run the engine for half an hour or so and then change the oil.
