A/C recharge kit

Have any of you guys ever used of those kits that Autzone, Schucks, Wal-Mart and the like carry to recharge your vehicles A/C? A car I'm working on is in need of refrigerant and I'm wondering if it's worth it or if it's just better for like a Midas or Meineke to do it.

Thanks!

To better answer your question, I/we need to know if you need to do a simple recharge or if the system has been opened to the atmosphere and thus needs to be evacuated and charged (and thus maybe a new dryer and consideration of a new orifice tube). Evacuating is not the end of the world, you just need a vacuum pump in addition to a guage set; a cost adder but an investment if you consider the cost at a shop. While I personally use the same equipment that any shop would use to service my units, a basic recharge due to low a low charge can be accomplished using the stuff available at the sources you noted with relative ease.

If you are low on freon, you have a leak that must be fixed.
Never put any stop-leak in your AC, because in time, it will cost you a lot more in repair than a simple o-ring replacement.
