On my FX4 I went with 17's. Tires are BFG All Terain KO's ( 315 / 70 / 17 ). Quiet on the highway and great in the dirt. ( FX4 with Rancho 4 inch lift kit )
My FX4 came with 18's. I think the tires measured 29 or 30 inches. My new tires are 33 inches.
Note: if you going to taller tires, you should consider regearing. I had 3.73 's and went up to 4.10 's. The offroad shop wanted me to install 4.30 's. Several problems I had with 33 inch tires and 3.73 gears are: 1) while driving 75 MPH, very slight uphill grade, the truck would downsift into 3rd. 2) 75 MPH, flat road, head wind, truck would downshift into 3rd. 3) passing on the freeway, always usually downshifted into 3rd. Afterwhile, i learned to feather the throttle while passing and keep it in overdrive, but it just seemed to take forever to pass. Mind you, I am not "flooring it" when I pass. I like 50 - 75 percent throttle.
Got the 4.10's today and i really like them. I only had about 10 minutes on the freeway today but looking forward to my 180 mile trip tomorrow. If you guys like, i will post my findings.
So your saying you don't drive above 60mph? With 4.56 your basically turned your truck into a tractor!
OK what ever you say .....I drive about 70 on the freeway and I have yet to hit red line on the freeway which is 115 MPH and I get about 13 city and 15 Highway and I am running mid 6's 0 to 60
No in 4 lo its a tank lol
You're going to really love those 4.10's when you pull into the pump. My truck loves the go-go juice. I average about 11 mpg's...5.4L, 4x4, HDSCAB, 8' box.
I do about 65 mph at 2000 rpm.
Ok, after correcting for tire size and new gears, in OD at 80 MPH, RPM IS 2,250 - not bad ! Maybe the 4.30 's weren't such a bad idea after all.
Somebody asked about cost? $900 for front and rear gears, $528 Alburn Posi Carrier ( shop said, Ford limited slip's are junk ), $840 labor
first i have to said im really new in this and i dont know much about gears and all that stuff but im looking forward to add more power to my fx4, do you really can see the difference by upgrading from 3.73 to 4.10, i mean more hp and more torque? im affraid to broke something just for trying to upgrade gears coz i like to go off road and dont know how safe it is, need your advice!
if i understand what u were saying u do not get more hp or tq from gears what u will see with lower gears (higher number) is better take off higher rpms on the hiway and a little less mpg but if u want to tow large loads a lot lower gears would be the thing for u im thinking about the 410s for better take off at the track hope this helps a little.
