What?

If I can decode what you are asking.....Number one on the distributor cap should be marked with a number 1. The number one cylinder is the front cylinder on the left side of the engine. As you are facing the engine, it is on the passenger side, closest to the radiator. I'm assuming that this is for a 400 as well?

You are actually asking about firing order on a 400 and wondering where is the number one position on the distributor to get started....correct ?

In most cases number one position is positioned in the 1 o'clock position of a clock if you are looking at the cap from in front of the truck.

IIRC,
The rotor inside the cap turns counter-clockwise.

EDIT:

The Figure 1 isn't always cast into the cap.

number 1 is marked on the cap. but most people when they restab the dizzy don't use that spot. so you must verify it.

in the haynes book it has number one at about 1-2 o'clock and i checked my truck and that is where it is, but one thing i dont like about the haynes book is it only has 6 spots on the top of the cap in the picture.

nope, big bold print at the top of the page, Chapter 2 Part B V8 engines, has a drawing of a v8, numbers out the pistons and gives firing orders for the v8s under it.

I went back to review the posts and noticed I had made a typo.
The 10 o'clock was meant to be a 1 o' clock.

no you go in the order of the firing order. Seems like you are in over your head on this project maybe get someone to help you with it.

You can make any terminal number one... The ideal location is one which puts the rotor pointing at number one at TDC of compression stroke, where you have as much range of motion as possible to adjust timing without the advance dashpot hitting something before the proper timing advance is achieved.
