[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jul-02 AT 08:43 AM (EST)]I have used one. I have had a couple of old portables in the past but they rusted out. Looking for a sidedraft now. Sometimes I can find them at the swapmeet but usually to big or for too much money. I'm a cheapskate so I'm looking for a used one that will last a season or a fixer-uper. They work good as long as the humidity isn't too high. I fill'em with a bucket or water hose.
Edit: There was a thread on this subject before. A search on "garage coolers" might give you some ideas on how to keep your cool.
My 10x20' shop is also plumbed into the central AC for the house, the adjacent garage has a window 5000 BTU AC unit. Skip those evaporative units alll they do is blow cool moist air, if you want real cold air get at least 5000 BTU, 10000 if you want the best.
I've currently got a 5000 BTU unit in my garage window and it works very well. At one time I had an old radiator and fan and just ran cold water through the radiator with the fan blowing through it. I adjusted the flow to minimize water usage and, as I recall, it did a pretty good job and kept the humidity down just like an A/C unit. You do have to have a drain for the radiator water outlet and the condensate off the radiator.
