Loose Steering

I've read some of the other posts on this, I have one question. I've checked all steering components, and they seem to be O.K., so I tightened the screw on the steering box about 1/4 turn, and that works for the time being. Then it always goes back to being loose after about 2-3 hundred miles. I've done this a couple of times. Does this mean that the worm gear in the box is shot, and should I replace the steering box. I figured I'd ask before spending a few hundred dollars to replace

I almost did not reply to this but then thought it is often the simple things... Did you loosen the locknut, set the screw where you wanted it and held it while retightening the locknut?

I marked it with white-out, sprayed it with liquid wrench and tightened 1/8 turn. Then drove it, tightened 1/16 turn and it helped some. I have not been in highway truck ruts yet.

I've done that 2 or 3 times but it always goes back to being loose after about 300 miles. I got a good mechanic I trust, and he said if that keeps happening you more than likely might have to replace the box, for about $300 depending on where you get the part. And if he does that, Im going to have him put manual hubs on to, since there on the way out

Does the hydraulic pump "whine" at you noticably? Does the power steering system leak at all? I only ask because if the problem persists like you say, it bodes the question, "Why?" Has the fluid broken down? Is there too little of it? Is the pump not able to keep up with the demand? Properly lubricated and aligned components shouldn't continue to wear away at the rate at which you have described without good cause. If you decide to have the gearbox replaced, make certain the rest of the system is in good working order. Otherwise you may be chasing the same problem in a brand new gearbox.

are you watching the steering cycle with someone else turningthe wheel or are you just twisting joints and visualy inspecting might not be just one end could be all together had similar problem with my f 150 replaced rod ends and good to go ive replaced the box also but i just went with a good junkyard box with no problems just check it well for leaks and play save alot of money that way
