I have a 2005 F-150. Its a basic work truck model. I'm borrowing a trailer that has brakes and a "round" power plug to hook to the truck. Problem is, I dont have this on my truck. I had a 2002 f-250 and it had the outlet. Someone said that my truck did have this "round" connector under my bumper. I looked and didn't see anything. Just the standard 4 point plug.
Do I need to buy the round one? And if so, Do I need to worry about not having a brake controller in my cab? I don't want to short anything out.
you can buy an adapter at wal-mart or any trailer place that converts from the multi round plug to the little 4 plug
all our vehicles have been retro fitted with 2 trailer plugs
the round connector is standard with us, I am at work and I think all ours are 7 wire, and we have adapters
we use barake controllers and have no problems with the 4 wire operations on our small trailers
note that not all round connectors are the same they may have 5, 6, 7 or 8 wires depending on the applications
remember the brakes are on the trailer for a reason, TO STOP IT
if brakes are needed because of the load youy need to think about what you are trying
we have electric brakes on all of our farm trailers and pretty much on all of the others, we just feel safer
I had the experience of pulling a tree spade we borrowed on time with a 3/4 ton dodge, the spade weighed 12-14,000 lbs
I had to stop for a light andf the trailer with out brakes pushed me through the intersection, not a fun feeling of no control so we have brakes on everything now the brakes on the truck were locked but the tree spade pushed the truck through the intersection
if the trailer has electric brakes and you have a heavy load you must be able yo stop it
you truck may not be the right tow unit

Your truck is pre-wired for a brake controller under the dash. Just get one and plug it in. Out back you will need to either buy some sort of adapter or go to the dealer and buy the small harness with both the flat 4 and the round 7 wire plug. It just plugs in in place of the one you have. 1 plug and a ground wire. Will run you around $60.
Be sure to check any adapter you use to make sure the plug matches the wiring for the trailor. I used an adapter from 7 pin to 5 pin and the trailor brakes locked up, had to change 2 wires around to make it match the trailor.
