Does any one know how to set the cam timing. I replaced the timing chain in my 352 lining up the marks like the shop manual says to but I can't get the truck to run right. It will backfire through the carb no matter where the timing is set. I was thinking about getting a compression tester and setting the timing where the highest compression is. Will this work? Thanks Eric
Need more info, what was the reason for cam chain replacement? How was the engine running before? If you line up the two marks there is not much more you can do with a stock timing set.
I would take a compression reading. You should have about 160#. Don't forget to remove all the plugs and hold the carb wide open. If the cam timming is off by one tooth, I think it would run real bad, most cams will allow only about 6~8 deg change and still run good. A cheap trick for cam timmers is to move the cam until you get max compression, this is an alternative to using a degree wheel.
The truck ran ok before I changed the timing chain. It had a lot of slack in it. The head gasket rusted away so I while I was changing them I figured I might as well check the timing chain since I had the top of the engine apart. Thanks For the replys
