I have the Dura Spark III in my 83 F 150. I'm thikning quite seriously about using a points type distributor and a Pertronix typoe setup to bypass all the Dura Spark components. Anyone done this? What do you think?
An alternative to the MSD is a Procomp ignition. It is a CDI ignition like MSD, (lo0ks like a copy) at less then half the price. It is sold by White Perrformance on ebay. The 6AL with a rev limiter is only $118.00, the 6A is $94. I just ordered one for my 1982. I am using MSD ignition on my Scout II, with a 392 and 4-71 BDS blower. I have a MSD 6AL, MSD Boost Timing Master, and a MSD timing computer. They have worked flawlessly for about 7 years now. Hopefully, the Procomp is as good. They have a 6A and a 6AL, the AL having a rev limiter. Better yet, the rev limiter is adjustable with a screw instead of having to fool around with chips as in the MSD.
Bdox - I'm not going to a points type ignition. I'm using a points distributor with an electronic conversion kit. It's the Crane Fireball XR-1 setup. Pretty simple and bypasses all the other electronic/emissions issues in the ignition system. It's extremely reliable. Many hot rodders use this type of a system because they can keep their stock distributor and have the reliability of an electronic ignition. I'll post after I get it running.
