I was wondering if it's possible to disable the factory PATS system. I'm not a big fan of it, is there an easy way to get rid of it? Two reasons: those damn expensive replacement keys ( I currently only have one), and installing a remote starter. I know that I can get a bypass module for the remote start. I know I can get keys from dealer or locksmith (and eBay). Just wondering if it's easier to do away with it altogether.....
I would not recommend buying the key on Ebay. You may not get the proper blank and it could be more hassle than it is worth. The dealer might be a little less expensive than a locksmith. You could also consider installing a HitchSafe Key Vault in your receiver hitch to store a spare key. The HitchSafe Key Vault allows you to store a key in the receiver hitch that can only be accessed with the proper 4 digit code.
You can mount your existing key inside the column shoroud so it is always sensed by the pickup ring for the PATS system and just use a conventional key cut to your pattern.
I've purchased and used keys from ebay vendors that worked perfectly. Yu just need to pick one that knows what they're doing and provide them with the correct data.
Since you have a 99 and only one key, you'd have to have either a dealer or a well equipped locksmith program the 2nd key. Once you have two functional keys, you can program the thrid and beyond yourself.
You would have to bypass the pats module, and get a pcm that is non pats, if I'm not mistaken, I'm not a hundred percent sure haven't done it before and wouldnt recommend it, I have seen remote starts on a pats, I'm guessing with the set up projectSHO recommended. The key transmitts(sp) a frequency to the tranceiver so you'd just have to have it in a close proximity. Good Luck
