One year ago today, Chris LeDoux passed away from a disease in his bile ducts in Kaycee, WY. Chris was the 1976 World Bareback champion, and went on to release over 30 country music albums of songs he wrote and recorded while on the rodeo circuit. He was a great bronc rider, a great artist, and an all around great man. He is sadly missed by rodeo and music fans all over the world.
I'm sure some of you have heard of him, and listen to his music. I just thought this was worth writing as Chris has been one of the people I've looked up to for quite some time. He was a true cowboy in every sense of the word.
He was one of my favorite singin' cowboys. I first became aware of him with his song Cadillac Ranch. Stampede and Hooked On An 8 Second Ride are two my favorite songs.
Garth Brooks credits Chris LeDoux with much of his success. He said that the line in his 1989 song "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)" where he says "a worn out tape of Chris LeDoux," launched his career. Garth didn't do his high octane, running, jumping, pyrotechnics in his show until he started opening for Chris LeDoux and saw how the fans reacted to Chris' style and all of his stuff. He even rode a mechanical bull on stage while singing. Chris and Garth were great friends. Garth even tried to donate part of his liver when Chris was diagnosed with cancer in 2000, but didn't want to let the media or anyone else know because they would make a big deal of it.
Obviously, Garth's recent song, "Good Ride Cowboy," was a tribute to Chris and his life.
Garth even tried to donate part of his liver when Chris was diagnosed with cancer in 2000, but didn't want to let the media or anyone else know because they would make a big deal of it.
And, wouldn't you know it, Garth felt like he let Chris down, when his liver wasn't a viable match. Chris was a great entertainer. And a good song writer- I believe he wrote "Amarillo by Morning."
Actually, "Amarillo By Morning" was written by Paul Fraser and Terry Stafford. However, Chris recorded before George did. He was a great songwriter and entertainer. However, he was an even better person, and that is what he cared about most.
As far as I know, most of what he wrote, he recorded himself. I'll try to think of some songs that others recorded and he wrote. Most of what he wrote was about his experiences and his life on the rodeo circuit, and not many other country singers could pull off singing about that stuff, with the exception of George Strait and Garth Brooks.
Life Is A Highway was a song he got from someone else but I don't know that he wrote songs for others. He did a duet with Garth Brooks "What Ya Gonna Do With A Cowboy" and a duet "Bang A Drum" with John Bon Jovi.
