I've been hearing a rattling from under my truck (1997 2.3 5-speed (Mazda) with 221k) lately that concerned me (see this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=454772) and I just got back from talking to my mechanic, who says that it's pretty definitely in the transmission. He's not sure whether it's the front bearing or one deeper inside. He changed the transmission fluid on the off chance that would buy me some time, but it didn't help. He also suggested a thicker fluid (like gear oil) but wasn't sure if that would do more harm than good.
Should I go ahead and get a rebuilt trans installed? This one doesn't shift too good anyway. Anyone know of a good way to find a good one? What might it cost me?
I got one from a seller that lists on eBay. In other words they have a real business and just use eBay to boost sales. It was shipped to my door for around ~$800. Mine is an 88' Ranger 2.3L 5sp (Mazda trans). The trans has been great, I wish I could say the same for my headgasket.
Remember the more you pay for shipping the faster it will get there. And if you're gonna pull the tranny, you outta do the clutch, slave, and throwout bearing while you have it down.
I want to say that shipping was like $125 so the total was around $800-$850 shipped. It came in less than a week. I could try look up the seller I got it from if you like.
He said it would cost $95 to ship the core back, or a $250 core charge if I didn't ship it back.
I need to go back to school in a week (this is spring break) and I don't have time to do the tranny myself. I'm toying with the idea of taking the Ranger off the road until the end of the semester, and then repairing it myself. I'd sort of like to buy a Crown Vic for transportation...
I figure that with the clutch and labor, having the tranny replaced would run about $550-600 plus the cost of the rebuilt one. That sound about right?
That is the place I got mine from. I didn't replace the clutch on mine since I knew it was replaced just before I got it. It wasn't that bad. I did it myself out on the street. The worst part was getting that pesky clutch line off and then having to use the alignment tool 3 times since it kept twisting and falling out just holding it with 1 hand.
My only complaint was that they didn't leave me any feedback.
