Hi everyone, I was wondering if anybody could give me some tips, well basically instructions for rebuilding a Ford 9" carrier. I understand that I have to get the bearings pressed on the diff case and everything,I just need to know everything about the pinion, that part has got me confused and WHAT is the deal with the gear marking compound and the crush sleeve? I have never attempted this before and none of my manuals show anything about this, I just figured i'd see if I could get anything out of you guys before I go hunting for books or something.
Thanks,
Mike
Im on some short time here, ill finally be 16 in 2 months.
Howdy Mike!
The crush sleeve on the pinion shaft of the 9inch sets up the preload on the pinion bearing. You torque the nut on the input yoke, the sleeve crushes and bingo! you have the proper preload. The crush sleeve should NEVER be reused!
As for the gear marking paint... this lets you see if your setup of the gear pattern is correct.
You really do need a book to do this... I have redone many of em and I still have the book layin out as I do it just to make sure all is well before I put it all together. Its a must!
LAST EDITED ON 12-Feb-01 AT 10:31 PM (EST)[p]Is preload supposed to be determined before you remove the pinion nut too? Thats the way I understood from reading other simple notes at other places. Maybe ill just stop tryin to be a cheapo and go hunting on Amazon or sumtin for a book on it. Im throwin around 190 bucks into this so I definitely dont wanna do it the wrong way. If I have any other problems i'll be sure to let you's know. By the way this is going up for auction on ebay as soon as its done, it's getting fully sanded, primed and covered in black, and all the components will be replaced (hopefully the right way). It is a 31 spline and has a Detriot Locker. Forgot to mention....the ratio is 3.50. Ill make sure and throw the link up on here when its ready.
Thanks,
Mike
