relocating the plates really isnt that hard... you could even leave the current ones, make an extension that went up from the axle and over the old perch, weld to it, and then redrill...
All you need is an angle grinder and a welder. The perches are easy to remove and re-weld anywhere you want. The other advantage is that it's easy to set your pinion angle where you want it after lifting.
An axle upgrade is the best choice, but if you can't do it right now for some reason, you can purchase a ring gear spacer for a 60. Then you can use 3 series gears on a 4 series carrier in the rear. 10-20 bucks used, maybe 50 bucks new. If you go this route, plan on the axle swap as soon as it is feasible.
I upgraded from my 16 spline to 30s for $10. Parts for the 30 splines are much more plentiful. I was going to go the 35 spline route until I looked at cost. Might as well get a dana 70 or 14 bolt.
