check engine light

This is a very weird play i've found myself in currently my check engine light is on the codes are p0401 & p0402. I've replaced the egr valve and now the codes are contradicting themselves. How is it exsesive flow and ensifencent flow at the same time. Any advise?

Try This Test

I suffered through a problem with code P0401. You did not say what year or engine. I changed the ERG Valve and the PDFE switch and it did not fix it. Same as you the light came back on in a few miles, but I finally fixed my 98 4.6L F150 with 112,000 miles by cleaning the ERG ports. The ports I'm speaking of can only be accessed my removing the throttle body off the top of the intake manifold. It's an elbow that connects most of the vacuum lines including the ERG Valve. I got a lot of carbon out of there using a drill bit by hand and that fixed it. There is a simple test to tell you if the ports are clear.

Remove the vacuum line from the ERG Valve and cap the hose. Start the engine and let it idle. Then apply vacuum (outside source) to the ERG Valve. The engine will stumble or stall if the ports are clean. If the engine continues to idle without change the ports are blocked and need to be cleaned. I cleaned mine in about an hour it's not that big of a deal on the 4.6L

I'm not sure what to tell you about P0402

Good Luck

Sorry, Its a 2002 4.6 but found out that it has a 2001 engine. I dont want to sound like a dork but what do you mean by an out side source?

Usually if you get a P0401 and 402 at the same time the DPFE sensor is the problem.
An outside source of vacuum to check the EGR valve can be a vacuum pump made for testing or it can be just a piece of vacuum hose that you suck on.

like racerguy said.....i had the same problem......401 and 402 fired at same time...it was the DPFE sensor.....it's located on the firewall on the drivers side of the engine cmopartment....has a couple hoses comming to and from it.....easy to replace and that should fix your problem.....i know a buddy that i got mine from a ford dealer for 16 bucks......if you have that hook up it's cheap also....

good luck
