will not downshift

Hi, I am a first time poster here. Have a 96 f350 7.3.auto . Yesterday while driving the truck seemed to lock in third gear while coming to a stop, stalling the engine. I shifted to neutral cranked the engine, shifted to drive and the engine stalled again. Again cranked, then shifted to 1 and it did not stall. I friend told me disconnect the wiring harness on the shift linkage, which i did and it seemed to correct the problem. I tried it again today, same thing, locked up. Again disconnected and reconnected the wiring drove for several miles and seems okay. I know it is going to happen again. Any ideas?

Thank you

Could also be the switch assembly on the tranny (where you're unplugging it), PCM might not realize it's in gear. Ford calls it a "Transmission Range Sensor"; a set of resistors in series to tell what position the shift lever is in.

Thanks for the help. I will check both.. I did drive it today about 30 miles without any problems. It seems like a hit or miss problem.

Thanks again. I will let you know how it goes.
