Just wondering if i need a ball joint press to take out ball joints and if i gotta take the axle out and if so how does my axle on my 79 f150 come about coming out?

I don't know for sure about the press ? but I have helped change them before and we got them out with a big hammer. Yes the axle has to come out, you have to take the front hub apart completely then pull the axle out through the hub opening. You will probably want to pull the diff cover off and drain the oil because when you push the axles back in you can't help but push some of the grime that has built up in the tubes from twenty years of driving into the center section, then you can clean what has been pushed in out so you don't ruin the bearings and gears. I did mine last November, needed the press and special 4 wheel drive adapter. It's needed to take them out and put them in. I went to local parts store (Murray's), they have tool "rental" program where you buy them, then get refund when you are done with them. I never did it before, could not believe how snug they were. Even the castle nut...I used propane torch and 4' cheater bar.

I beleive we used a board and hit on it to get them back in real careful, been several years can't remember for sure. Sorry Greg Ne
