Radio shack used to sell little circuit books that can be fun. You can also buy big books with collected basic circuits at bookstores. They were good for getting circuit ideas for teaching electronics to people. A simple widget is much better than most dry textbook experiments.

Yes, those books were great. It'd be just awful if someone were to scan those into pdfs and share them online. Like some terrible person has done with the massive "Art of Electronics" book (a readable and excellent text on electronics, by the way, except for weak coverage of SCRs and TRIACs).
