I have a 76' f-100 with a 302 and a c4. over Christmas my
engine died. I found a guy with a replacement out of a 78 Ltd
(70,000 miles) and he put it in for a good price. I'm at
college so I just got to drive it for the first time this
weekend when I went home. It ran extremely strong except for a
odd ticking noise that occurs under acceleration and while
climbing hills (goes faster with higher rpm's and gets louder as
the grade increases). The sound is most prominent rear the
floor just by the firewall. While decelerating a completely
different sound occurs, it sounds almost like someone is
rattling a marble in a metal cup. It too is most prominent in
the same location. At idle the sound is a quieter combination
of the two that can be heard in the cab but can barely be heard
under the hood.
Any ideas on this? Does it sound more like a lifter, wrist pin, exhaust leak, or a loose bolt inside torque converter area?
John, if you could crawl under the truck an exaust leak is easy to detect. Try removing the flywheel cover temporarily and see if the noise disapears. Also a clicking noise under a load could be detonation, check your timing. Good luck, Greg58 [Proud Owner of 77 Hi-Boy]
I had a noise similar to what you describe coming from my 78 Bronco. I worked on finding it for about 3 months, replaced exhaust header (thought it was cracked), checked, tightened, sealed exhaust pipes, muffler, etc. Finally found that a casting plug in the back of driver's side head had rusted thru and was causing a leak. No way to get to it to replace except to cut an access hole in firewall. Since then I have had same plug to fail on passenger side, but luckily it is on the front end of head. Just an idea. Don
