Just found out that the pass. side ear has cracked off the trans extention housing where the trans mount is bolted. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm going to see if it can be welded back on and strengthened. They want like 190 bucks for a replacement housing so this has to work. I'll post up some pics of the repaired housing if they can do it.
A good transmission shop may have one for a decent price. At the very least they can get you one from a "core shop" (a business that parts out used or junk transmissions). I bet you can buy one for $50.
This would only happen if you have a driveshaft problem. A bad u-joint or the driveshaft may be bent or out of balance.
checked with a dealer and he says this problem is in their technical sevice bulletin.. it was not recalled cause it wasnt a danger apparently.. but a lot of van and trucks with this trans are having this problem.. They want 180 dollars for a new one. cant find one at the junk yard.. having it welded localy.
I know there was a TSB on their "Ambulance chassis" vans a vew years ago for this very problem. The program replaced the extension housing and bushing and installed an alunimum drive shaft.
Well, It's welded and reinforced.Only cost me 35 bucks. Got it back together and no leaky. Ended up doing the U-joints and replacing the speed sensor because it came out in 2 pieces LOL. Thanks for the feedback Clubwagon.
It looked like it had been cracked for a long time. It had major corrosion in the cracked area.
If it cracks again I'll report back. It only has to last another 200K or so anyhow.
