Im looking at a 1989 Ford F-350 extended cab, long bed dually, 2wd, 5 speed manual, and i think a 7.3 diesel. What type of fuel mileage should i suspect from this truck. I like the truck but if its going to kill me one fuel cost. Right know i filled up my suburban (sorry its not a ford but it does good on mileage its a 6.2) diesel was at 2.39 a gallon in town and like 2.59 by the interstate.
I have an F-250 XLT Lariet Diesel with a 7.3 non-turbo with a 5 speed manual. If I am driving pure highway with little or no load I can get about 20-22 miles per gallon. City/Hwy will get me about 18 miles per gallon and when towing a fully to overloaded trailer (28 cubic yards+) I get about 10-12 miles per gallon. Hope this helps.
Thats about like here. Some places diesel is same, more, or less than gas. Its crazy. I do not know what the rear gear on the truck is because i havent looked at it that close to find out.
Diesel prices jumped in southern Oregon awile ago, price is about 2.86 a gallon and before that about 2.70, miss the good old 1.60 a gallon. Price does not mean much to me currently, I finally put my truck out of service with bad plugs, controller, too small batt. for cold weather, and possibly something wrong with fuel system. Once back running, its back trying to beat the pump.
My 93,F350 dually IDI wo turbo/auto and 4.10's gets 14 to 18 empty and 11 pulling a 28 foot enclosed race car trailer w/2800 lb door car. I put 1,400,000 mile on this truck pulling RV trailers to 12,000 lbs and averaged 11.75 miles both ways over all those trips east and west coast, north to Alaska and south to Mexico.
my 94 7.3 IDI turbo gets 11.2 unloaded and 6.1 loaded... .its a new engine and new BUILT e4od with 4.10 gears... i think something is not setup right... trying to figure it out now...
its got 31K on it now... runs good except the MPG suck and it feels like it should have more pedal...
hook a camper to it and sure it'll pull 60-70 all day... but thats on the floor at 6 mpg... at 2500 rpm...
i cant even get it to 3K rpm.. even unloaded... starting o think the IP needs turned up or something...
and even at WOT on the floor ... no black smoke at all..
Sureshot, you need to have that pump looked at. My '84 6.9L is NA and and I was getting 18mpg when i had 4.10's. You said its a new motor, did you have the injector pump timed? I know if it's off just alittle it will make the whole motor feel sluggish. Do you have gauges? What are you pyro and boost readings with and w/o a load. Is your turbo wastegated or nonwastegated? Have you ever adjusted the wastegate rod?
If you tell us some more about your setup I'd bet someone on here can cure that mileage problem.
