Gentelmen I just returned from Iraq and when I tried to start my 1993 F250 7.3 IDI 2WD, I noticecd that the wts light does not come on but the glow plugs seem to be cycling properly. It starts right up and it's been fairly cool here in beautiful Jacksonville NC. My guess is the bulb is out in the WTS lamp. OK now how do I change that thing? Do you get at that bulb from the back, under the dash? Which wire would I check comming off of the controller to see if it's getting current?
Checking of the wts light bulb on the 93' is real easy just pry (remove) the two plastic slots on either side of the steering wheel with a small screwdriver. There are a couple of Torqex screws behind the cover, remove them.
Remove the headlight switch buttom with a small screw driver.
Pull the dash panel out and disconnect the tank selector switch as well as the electrical connector to the light cluster. You can now remove the dash panel and change the bulbs by unscrewing them.
If your truck is an automatic you may have to put the tranny selector switch into 1st gear to get the panel to slide over the steering column.
I just replaced my dads WTS light last weekend. He had a burned out bulb, first one I have ever seen burnt out.
Sebastian.
Thanks gentlemen for the great information. I'll tackle this on Saturday and see if I can get it working. I checked the fuse and it's OK so it must just be a blown bulb. It was working fine until about two weeks ago my wife just noticed that it was not working since she was starting the truck about once a week!
While you are at it you might want to grab four +/- new bulbs and change all the bulbs in that instrument cluster. (WTS, Water in Fuel, etc...)
To remove the bulbs just turn the bulb holder about a 1/4 turn. Once you have the bulb holder out just pull the bulb out of the bulb holder. Some of mine were pretty stuck and it took a lot of pulling to get the bulb out of the bulb holder.
Another problem I ran into is that the bulb holder sometimes does not make very good contact so test the WTS light before you put the dash panel back together. I ended up pulling the whole thing apart twice as the bulb holder did not have proper contact the first time around.
