Decided to jump in and try sumthin. The first cat is intact, the second cat is hollow. That is where it ended. Well i got a local shop to put duals on it, no muffler. He mad a y-pipe out out 2 1/4, connected that to the gutted cat with a foot or so of same pipe. Then he ran two 2 1/4 pipes back over the axle one straight one over and out the drivers side. They used 14 gauge, which i think is some of the thicker stuff?? Wound up running me 130$$ I had no clue what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. It quieted it down nicely in the cab and out side at idle. Runnign down the road you can hear it when you punch it, and some when ya cruise, but it is 100 times better than just dumping under the cab. I believe i even picked up some low end power. This is exactly what i was going for, least restrictive system and some what quiet.. So all in all i feel it was money well spent. How does this iound to you all? pretty good set up??
i would have done the same, but i am on a very limited budget so i bought a $20 muffler and spent $20 on 2 1/4" pipe and ran it out before the passenger side rear wheel. once i get money i'd like to get the kit from LMC truck for duals
Thats about what I did for my truck. I left the first cat and cut out the second cat. Then replaced the factory muffler with a glasspack. To top it all off we ran the pipe back then cut over and it comes out right in front of the rear tire. I added a 4" exhaust tip. Ya, I think your right about the added power down low. My truck feels the same way. I can hold 5th gear going up steep hills.
Today we had alotta rain, maybe 2 or 3". So I thought I'd take my truck and have some fun on the way home from work today. I was doing some 4x4ing along a creek and my truck fell in. I thought I was gonna be stuck but it wasn't and it drove out fine. However in the proccess of climbing the slick bank, I ripped my exhaust off lol. So, for now it's in the bed of the truck waiting to be welded back on.
how does it sound? How do any of the above mentioned setups sound? Im planning on doing my exhaust sometime in the futrure, but running on a pretty tight budget I dont want to shell out the money for fancy exhaust if its going to make me sound like a lawnmower. Also, whats it smell like? I know it sounds like a wierd question but I had thought about scrapping one of my cats but I dont want to have to smell it all the time. (sounds wierd I know but a friend of mine has an '82 without one cat and it reeks) Sorry to ask so many questions.
I have a 300 straight six and I put my own dual exaust on it. There not true duals because I heard that true duals on a straight six sound like crap. There is no muffler and no cats. The cats where gone when I got the truck. Its quiet at an idle but when you hit 2500 rpms and back off it kackles and pops like crazy. It sounds good for a six banger the pipes are only 2 inch is why it kackles like crazy. I am about to put 24 inch tips that are 3 1/2 inches round on it too.

so you have no mufflers at all!!!!!!!!!!! Cant belive its not loud untill 2500rpms
but i have never heard a system that ran out the back w/o a mufflker i have taken mufflers off at teh cab on cars and thats LOUD sound like a V8 on a 2.3 mustang
I have both cats and a staight 2 1/2" pipe back to the axle and then it goes back into a 2 1/4" pipe over the axle and out behind the rear pass wheel. It sound like a dump truck. It almost rattles your teeth I'm looking for something milder and I want better low end torque. Yours sounds like it has accomplished this -might be a doable.
i had str8 2 1/2 twin pipes on my 300 for 2 yrs!!! TRUE DUALS....i used the newer ex. manifolds off the 300's....had to plug the holes where the smog stuff went and grind a couple of ears off....then i ran the 2 1/2 pipes ALL the way out the back!!! at 70 MPH....no need in trying to talk to anyone or listen to the radio...engine was turning about 2700 RPM's....TOO LOUD!!
last yr i had glass packs installed and after the guy let it down, i wanted to listen to it....it had the CRACK sound when rackin' back......(you can bring idle speed up some to stop the krackle & pop)......a friend had given me his TIPS....3 1/2 chrome tips.....so i decided to try them on.....made a Throater sound....BUT even with the glass packs....its still loud ...IF i want it to be and even at hiway speeds....still a lil LOUD! maybe i'll put some flow masters on next....
my motor was re-conditioned...bored .060....and it has the big valves in the head.....
what i'd like to hear is.....a 300 with a cam bigger than the RV cam....i've put the RV cams in several trucks and cars i've owned....still have a 78 F-150 Super Cab i bought new with the RV cam....i noticed a lil "shake" to it....and maybe a lil more mid-range power....but what i need with the 300 is MORE than a little.....i have the ...OLD GRANNY 4 SPEED in it....and the ratio between 3rd & 4th....well....if i need to pass....and am running say, 45 MPH...thats just too FAST to drop back to 3rd.....(not sure what the RPM's would be)......and takes a lil while to..."build a fire" in it so i can pass......i don't a real RADICAL sounding cam....but all i can find are either THAT or the RV's......
sooo, anyone out there got/had anything like this???? i have maybe 30,000 on the engine...doesn't use any oil....i've rebuilt the AC....new comp. dryer, condensor...just not as cold as R 12...gotta rebuild front end, have a couple of dings taken out and i'm gonna paint it myself....then i'll have a nice looking, good running truck....gonna do me forever....NO MORE PAYMENTS for me!!! use to buy new ones....
any help will be appreciated.....or if i can help anyone, drop me a line...

buddy, let me tell ya, my TRUE duals sound so much better than the stock sound, it doesnt sound like a little honda civic. it sounds like a tractor and a v6 mixed. and i have noticed a conciderable increase in power and a considerable decrease in mileage. dual 2 inchers with noting but an 02 sensor in the pipe.
A 300 (even with open pipes) will NEVER sound as good as a big block with open pipes in my book. Maybe thats just me but..... My 300 with this glasspack sounds ok. I still like the sound of a V-8 though.
