operating temp

I have a 1985 Bronco II. Just recently started doing a really odd thing. Normally the temp gage stays right near the center (the o in normal). Yesterday, and twice today, within a matter of seconds, the gage jumped from there right up to the top mark. hovered there for 3 or 4 minutes, then dropped back down to where it was. Everytime the jump is in a matter of seconds, stays high for less than 5 minutes, then drops back to the same spot in a matter of seconds. I put a new thermostat in 4 months ago. Any ideas?

Did you replace the thermostat with a 160-, 180-, or 192-degree one? Another issue might be that the fan clutch could be failing... and, if you don't have a fan shroud, get one. I've also seen people replace the fan clutch/plastic fan with a flex fan and had better results *shrug*

Temp

Check your temp sender it could not get that hot in a matter of seconds,could be a bad sender or your wiring has a problem.

Sounds like you might have air in the cooling system.When air bubble gose by the sender unit and it shows real high temp till the water pushes it on by.Or you might have a thermostat thats going bad.{ yea only after 4 months}
Could be any of the above too.Good Luck!!
