were there different 3 speed manuals?

Hello,
I was just wondering if the three speed manuals were the same from motor to motor, and year to year? I am wondering because I have a '73 f-100 with a 390 and a bad three speed. I also have a totaled '79 f-100/300 six with a newly rebuilt 3-speed. Are these two trannies the same? I realize I woud have to switch the bell housings.
Thanks for any info

I am pretty sure the v8 version of the 3.03 3 speed is a little longer. You can measure your two transmissions and count the splines to see they'll interchange. You might need to change over the bell housing and linkage, if I'm wrong and they're are the same length.

after 30 years its possible someone did put in a 390. they are both FE enignes so they are a direct bolt up. the only thing that differs is the stroke of the 360 vs. the 390 other than that they are identical.

390 engine with 3 on tree transmission

I learned to drive on my dad's 1972 F100 Ranger XLT which had the 390 engine mated to the 3 speed (three on the tree) transmission. As far as I know the truck was all original.
