Injector cleaning

I have a 95 powerstroke. Purchased it 4 years ago with 78K miles. I consistantly had 18 mpg on the highway with automatic and 410 RE. Now I have 160K miles and the mpg has gone down to 16 mpg. Thinking (something I should not do) the injectors might be getting dirty I would try to clean them with a fuel additive. From two sources, one from "Ford" and one an independent, I could add a quart of ATF to the tank and that would clean the injectors. Now I thought I should ask the "pros". Thats why I asking you guys. I do change all filters and lubercants regularly and read your forums weekly.

Thanks

Rich

stanadyne performance formula is the only one i run.
diesel kleen works well too but i like the 1st better.
ATF can tear stuff up its not reccomended.

the injectors and other related parts could be just seeing some overtime wear that is causeing the loss in fuel mileage. has the drop in fuel mileage just happened or has it been gradual?

Have you cleaned the FPR screen when you change the fuel filter. This make a big difference if it was plugged. I use stanadyne every second fill up. Works especially well if going on a good haul. Another thing to look at is the catalitic converter. If its plugged your going to half your mileage. If you have never used a fuel additive you will see a big improvement in just 2 tanks.

I use Lucas Fuel Treatment. I've brought a couple of rough running Powerstrokes back to life with this stuff.

Thanks guys... over the last few years I've used both stanadyne and diesel kleen with mixed results. I guess I should stay away from the ATF. Thanks again.
