mazda or ZF
hey, i have a 96 F150 with a 300 and a 5 spd. I am wondering if I have the Mazda or ZF tranny. I wouldn't consider 1st a granny, but I can start in 2nd without too much effort. and I usually shift into 2nd at about 10 mph (no tach). It seems to have pretty good pull in 1st, but I heard the ZF's came only in 250s and 350s. If yall think I do have the Mazda tranny. how long do these usually last. There's about 140,000 mi. on it now. thanks for any info.

Look under the truck the ZF has PTO plates one or both side also look at the case pattern the ZF's had a diamond patern on the case and the Mazda had a square pattern. ZF will last a real long time as it is built tough. Mazda is not a bad tranny imo just prone to leaks at the plugs on the top and much lighter duty than the ZF. My mazda is approaching 200,000 miles with nothing more than regular maintenance on it and a new slave cylinder. And my truck get used for towing and hauling regularly too I just don't abuse it.
