Nope, it's not an emergency brake. I finally got around to making my exhaust brake on the 7.3! Cool, eh! I haven't got it set to work with the brake pedal yet, but everything is there for it. Right now it's just operated by a dash switch. Works pretty well too. Works best if the revs are above 2000. It should be pretty handy for pulling my trailer.
Oh yeah, It cost me about $10.
sweet, ive always heard of this, but dont really understand it... i know they have em on big rigs and you arent really suppose to use it in the city...
REAL cheap. The powerstrokes all come with an exhaust back pressure valve which was designed to be used for cold weather startups. When the ambient temp is low, the EBPV will close intermitently to restrict the exhaust gasses leaving the engine. It is right inside the turbo housing. It is controlled by the PCM, but I just cut the 2 wires, ran them to a switch, grounded one end and found a power source for the other. Flip switch, valve closes! That's all there is to it. To hook it up to work with the brakes is a little more complicated, but not much. The main difference is that the power is drawn from your brake indicator light in that set up. Haven't done that yet.
The wife wanted me to disconect it entirely because it would come on intermitantly while she was driving and slow down the drive wheels which put the truck into a skid. It put her in the ditch once. Now it's only on when we want it to be. With the open exhaust on my rig, it sounds just like the big boys too!!!
From FTE!! This place is awesome. Some guys on the diesel forum have them. You can also buy an ebrake kit, but why, when it only costs a couple of bucks to do it yourself. Actually the guys posted a site that has a LOT of powerstroke stuff. High idle controls, ebrakes, and on and on and on...... Really cool. All of it is Do-it-yourself stuff. Some of the links don't work anymore, but the stuff that's still there is awesome.
I've got it in my favorites somewhere, but you could probably just find it by Googling Stevebaz.
Kinda like downshifting? Yeah, Only a little more so. And it's at the flip of a switch. Plus, It's BLOODY LOUD!!!!!
As for more cool cheap mods, as many as I can! The ones I've got listed on my signiture are almost all the ones I know so far, but I'm sure I'll find more. I'll just have to take some pics of things and try to post them. I've put on an open 4" exhaust (and when I say open, I mean OPEN [there's nothing to slow the gases]). That one cost about $10 for the used mandrel bent pipe. The 10k mod is a resistor that is jumpered across the wires leading to the fuel pressure sending unit. It basically tricks the computer into thinking that the fuel pressure is low and so it bumps it up! I like that one a lot. I also have that one wired to a dash-mounted switch. $5.
The Kwick filter mod is kinda like putting in a K & N filter, except this one actually stops the dirt! $45
FPR shim is a BB (yes that's right, a BB) or something of similar size that is places behind the spring in the fuel pressure regulator and that brings up your fuel rail pressure. Stock is supposed to be about 40-50 lbs, but mine was lower than that. The highest recomended rail pressure is 70 psi. Guess where mine is at now? That one was basically free.
That's all the cheap mods I've done so far. Next on my list is a high idle switch. The parts should run about $15-20. Just need the time. Is that enough detail Pyro?
Sorry about that last post. I guess I like my toys!
The other things I've done weren't so cheap, but hey, what can you do.
Changed rear end gearing 4.10 to 3.55
Swapped from bech to 40-20-40 front bench
Swapped 10' service deck to regular dually long box
went from 215/85/16' to 235's
Full, I know how you feel as I like my toys too.
I would like a different hi-idle for my L8000, it has a twist cable now. What is your hi idle system like and cost? I have air brakes on my truck so I could use an air operated system but an electric one maybe easier to install.
To be honest, I don't recall. I have the instructions printed off somewhere. When I go to do it and can't find them, I'll just go back to Steve Baz's website and print it off again. For anyone with a PSD who wants to do some D-I-Y toys, that's the place to go. I think for cost, it worked out to around $20 or so. You can get everything for it at Radio Shack. Likely a few bits can be found cheaper though. As I recall, there are even RS part Nos in the instructions.
