I have a 2000 4x4 Ranger with the 4.0L V6 and 107,000 miles on it.During idle the engine has a knock in it,under normal driving it isn't there,only when it's idling.Is this bad?Is there any way to get rid of it?Any help would be appreciated.
Is all maintenance up to date, i.e. plugs? What gas are you running? Could try cleaning the IAC (idle air control valve) and throttle body but I don't see it makin' a difference. Speaking of which I need to do that.
Pinging normally occurs under load, not idling, so your problem isn't gas. Could
you describe the "knocking" a little more? The noise you are hearing could be
valve train noise. Is the noise affected by temperature (worse hot or cold)?
Just an academic question that could cause valve train noise, are you using a Fram oil filter?
Many late 90's 4.0's have tolerances on the wrist pin(s) that result in a soft, dull metallic tap at low rpm's. There should be a TSB on this issue; Ford proclaims it to be normal. It's not your gas, plugs, IAC or the like. There is a very, very remote chance that it *could* be low oil pressure. However, if the oil pressure was low enough to result in a rod bearing knock, the gauge (idiot gauge) would show this. FWIW, I've used Fram oil filters on my vehicles with a collective total mileage of at least 600,000 miles and I've never had low oil pressure/longevity/sludge/wear/etc issues of any kind whatsoever.
