Which new/rebuilt engine do I want?

The situation:
I'm looking at 1988-93 F350 crew cab dually with a 7.3. I'd like more power. It will be a towing vehicle for about 50% of it's mileage at about 18000lbs GCW. I want a minimum of 300hp and 550ft lbs.

My research so far:
A Dodge Cummins turbo diesel looks good. What do they cost? Are they reliable?
Anyone know what a what a ZF 6 speed manual costs?
Do these two bolt together, or do you need adapters etc?

So put a turbo on the 7.3 or buy a Power Stroke truck.

I can get a ZF 6 for 2500 at a local salvage yard.
I can buy a Cummins for 2000+ at the same yard.
I can buy all the adapters for another 2000.
Then I can put it all together.

Why would I want to spend 8 to 12 thousand and then spend all that money for parts and the time to assemble it all?

Here is a 1986 6.9 natural aspirated motor and the gross is over 20 thousand.
You will also notice in the backround of the photo that I am not in flat country.
Is driving 10 MPH faster worth all the above money?
And you still have to stop the load, which is much harder than dragging it.

Very true. Everything I've looked at so far says buying a 2000 F350 is by far the easiest and most reliable solution. I'm just looking for a way to do it cheaper and still get the same results. So far the end price is very similar but playing with an older model take a huge additional amount of time and effort.

As you will see mine is a 1986 F250 that has been modified way to much.
It is a lot of fun, but not economically feasable.

Time? I have 20 years invested in mine and it is still not done the way I want it.
