Need some help here. 87 Ranger,2.9, 5-speed with 127,000+ miles. Truck sat for some time, 2years but would start and drive once in a while. I decided to start driving again but it has had issues. First it would not run at all. I replaced first all new wires, cap, rotor, plugs. No fire, then new coil,no fire. Then I replaced reman distributor with new pick-up coil. It runs! I test drive a few times and it over heats and the radiator has a crack. Replaced with new one, new hoses and after another overheat replace themostat. Truck starts fine and runs good. I did not use a light to retime...does not run rough. But...after driving the truck for 10-15 miles and it is heated up normally,if you turn it off it will not start. It spins fine but will not start. If you let it cool down..10-15 minutes it will start. IF I do not turn it off, it will run all day! I also replace the Ignition module because someone said it has to be it. Orginal would test fine but it had discoloration and we thought under engine heat it must be breaking down. But it had no effect. It sill will start fine cold and when it is hot , it will not. It has fuel at the fuel rail but I do not have a pressure gauge. I though maybe the fuel pumps( has a primary in the tank and high pressure in the frame rail) were getting hot...but it runs fine. Any ideas ?? Thanks..mm
You have exact problem I had my 94 ranger, it happened in April 2004, I ended up having her towed to shop cause once the engine is hot and you stopped for work like 15 min, it would not start.
My problem is main relay and fuel relay, they are small computer chips looking like 3 pronged plugs at power box. You have to have mechanic look into it and replace them, cost like 125-150 bucks top. Since then, I have never have problem again, crank up at first twist. Been wasting time, changing coil, plug, check alternator, ignition module blah..blah, it is not them.
Mechanic said, these relay last about 8-10 years and you will have problem starting...engine cranking cranking but not igniting! till you drain your battery.
Same like Honda and Toyota...when they get as old as 10 years, problems will come...sometimes you stop filling up at gas station and can't start up again...only cranking...some faimiiar?
It may be the cause...may be not, but at least that is what happened to my 94 Ranger and 90 Honda CRX
