1965 custom cab door/engine question/cab ?
#1
I just got a 1965 f-100 2w drive custom cab(parts truck). The inner step is different than my 64, will these doors interchange or will I have a gap at the floor/step on my 64?

This truck has what I believe is a 352. I've done a search and saw several references to and FE engine. Is there a difference between a 352 and a 352FE? Would this be a good project engine to keep around and use later?

This cab has a lot less rust than my 64 and the dash is perfect(no stereo surgury has taken place). Could this cab be used on a 64 frame? Legal and practical answers needed. At first glance the steering wheel shaft looks to be in a different location.
thanks
The "step" makes no difference in a door, both openings are same size in conventional cabs. But doors are all you can use, at least in a bolt in context, nothing else bolts across the different year models between 64 and earlier or 65 & later.
A 65 frame will take engines as "bolt in swaps" thru mid 90s whereas a 64 frame won't take anything built after 1964 because it's all side mounted engines after 1964. Your 64 has a front mount and two rear mounts on the bellhousing, but no transmission mount. 65-79 use side engine mounts & a rear transmission mount which req's a X Member the 64s do not come with. You will need a conversion set up to put the later 352 in the earlier model truck.
The 64 & 65 frames are totally different from each other, everything about them is different. suspension, mounts & mounting set ups, steering, side rail shape [reason for the step you're talking about] crossmembers, front frame horns, everything. My 66 is on a 79 frame so I can bring my Slick into the Y2k Millennium and not leave it in the middle of the last century, at the end of the last millennium, in a performance & handling context.
I would not go through the rigors of adapting a 65 or 66 Slick body to the 61-64 frame. That's not worth the work because of the resulting downgrade in performance [IMHO]. Although I'd adapt a 61-64 to a 65-79 style frame if I had a pristine 61-64 truck. I enjoy the better engines, Power Steering & front disc brakes, Independent front suspension, out of cab fuel tank and a lot of other acoutraments of the later frames. . .
FE is the style of the engine, it was designed in the early to mid 50s. The only FoMoCo 352 ever made is the FE type. The intake manifold runs under the rocker covers as 1/4 of the cyl head. FE engines have the rectangular exhaust ports. Now I know this seems to conflict with what I said about the front engine mount of your 64 truck since these engines appeared in 1958, BUT there were FT engines for trucks, bigger trucks, like F-600 etc which are close to the FE, but again they're not the same and are just enough different so as to create swap problems.
351s are where there are several. There's a 351 Windsor, the Boss 351, the 351C or "Cleveland" and the 351/400M "modified" none are FE's I believe the FE designation is FORD EDSEL which is what the FE was designed for.
