I was told today that i need to obtain new heads for my 400 rebuild because the pushrods come throuigh at a slightly different angle on the left head as opposed to the right head, therefore the heads must be different. I am sure that when I had the heads done I checke the numbers and they matched. So I was wondering if anyone else has ever noticed a different pushrod angle between heads, and if the 351M heads were slightly different than the 400 heads in this regard?
i haven't heard that one before but it's a good one! like danlee says, there is not a "left" or "right" head. every 335 series cylinder head will have the same pushrod angles. 2V, Aussie, 4V, Boss, open chamber, cosed chamber, screw in studs, pedestal rockers will all have the same angles. if you were to switch the heads side to side the angles will all be the same as they were when the heads were on the other side, because the heads are the same.
While I haven't seen this problem for myself, I was the one who built this motor, and was of the understanding that the heads were same on this motor, whether left or right. That is why I questioned my the person currently working on the enigine as to what he was seeing. I guess I will just have to make the trip down to try and get a handle on what he is claiming and go from there. This engine has been a nightmare from thr word go, and I wish I truly had never tried to do it and had instead gone with the 302 as my gut told me to. I have been 2 years, 3 teardowns, and am still no closer to having a working truck
Sounds like you need to find a machinist and engine builder that knows Fords. Good luck because most of them are just Cheby guys that think anything that is not GM is junk. Of course since they don't know anything about Fords they make every Ford engine they work on into junk...
