Well I just put the Edelbrock intake and 1405 carb on my truck. I expected some bugs and I wasn't disappointed. The intake got pretty hot but I suspect that to be a bad thermostat. Now, about the carb. I got the mixture right(I think). I haven't even messed with the idle speed yet as it is pretty close to right. I took it out for a spin and it ran okay for a few minutes. Then, when I came off a stop sign in the middle of a hill, it started sputtering and coughing like it was out of gas. (And NO, it isn't.) I barely made it home. It seemed to idle okay, but under a load, it pooped out. Any ideas what adjustments need to be made? Also, it hesitates when I hit the throttle quickly. I guess the two are connected. I have checked all the obvious things like the fuel filter. I think it just needs adjusting. Thanks for any suggestions. Bill
P.S. I thought about the fuel boiling in the carb as the intake got pretty hot, but I have a 1" phenolic spacer under the carb so I don't THINK this could be it.

LAST EDITED ON 04-Mar-01 AT 08:03 AM (EST)[p]Is this a new carb? I put the 1406 on and had to turn the idle adjust screws way in, I dont think that would effect your off idel problem, I used a vacume guage to adjust the idle screws, turned in till I got the smoothest highest vacume reading. I also went 1 step leaner according to the book that I got with the carb. I do alot of highway driving so wanted it a lean as I could for the mpg, I do have a slight hesitation off idle untill the engine is fully warmed.
I dont think I answered your question, but if it is a used carb maybe the previouse owner fooled around with the jets and rods so maybe that could be the problem. If it ran fine at first then started acting up maybe some dirt made its way to the bowl and is restricting the metering rod/jet.
I have the exact same set-up as you do and have had similar problems. I finally fattened up the jets, readjusted the floats, and changed metering rods and it seems to run well. Havent checked mileage yet because I havent put a full load of fuel through it yet. Oh, I also have the performer cam and timing set.
