I am replaceing the starter, on my 97 250HD. I have removed the battery cables and the cable to the starter and have gotten the 2 closest mounting bolts loosened, but cannot figure out how to remove the third( closest to the selonoid). I can get a wrench on the last bolt, but cannot turn it very far because of the main frame being so close. It will be almost impossible to get my hands in place to turn the bolt once I have it loose. What am I missing here. I have replaced starters on cars, but this boogles me on how they got this mounted in such a tight space. I have droped 1,600.00 in the last month getting it fixed( mostly electrical) and need to save some cash and do this myself.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
I did mine with a socket and ratchet. I think I used a deep socket. Take that bolt out first so the other two can hold the starter in place while you remove it. When you go back put it in last for the same reason. It is hard but can be done. Good luck
edit: where are you located? maybe myself or someone else is close enough to give you a hand.
Thank you for the replies and good information. After about 20 minutes of repondering the problem( using an 80 heavy bag. It works wonders) I needed to clear some room to get my arm over the frame. I cut out a small section of the plastic wheel well so I could slide my arm through and over the frame to reach the last bolt. It is on and working.
Thanks again.
gotdiesel: Thanks for the offer. I am located in Katy Texas. My truck died at the school I work at, so it is in my scene shop. Now I can move it and set the shop back up.
No problem. Katy is a little far for me to go to put on a starter. You are about 7 hours away. Glad you got it running. Sorry I couldnt help more. Just keep posting here. You'll learn a lot. Good luck
