I was reading the Best Vice thread and the majority of people said Wilton made as good or better vice than most. Also said that they were expensive. Do they make a cheap line also? I was at Home Depot today and they have a 5" Wilton for $55. Wasn't sure if it was priced wrong or if Wilton made a low price vice line for the box stores.
What is the difference in forged and cast? Are both of the same metal? Have used a lot of Wilton vices in my time and have seen a lot of them fail but most failures were in the base of the swivel type. Let me also say they had some pretty rough use on the back of a wireline truck.
I don't think the difference is between cast and forged. The difference between a cheap vice and a good vice is cheap ones are cast iron and expensive ones are cast steel. Steel is much stronger and malleable than iron.
Price never entered my mind but was sure all I had ever seen (Wilton) were cast of some type and I guess I don't know the difference. And let me say that Wilton is a very popular vice in the oilfield and I have no gripe with them. All oilfield hands seem to rough on tools and as my Dad would say; could tear up an anvil with a rubber hammer.

Metallurgically, forged is much, much stronger. But jeez loweez- what are you guys doing to these things? I've stripped a screw, and mangled the swivel clamp, but I've never broken a vise, not even a cheapie. Depends on what you use it for. If I was a blacksmith, I'd go top-of-the-line. For homeowner use, I'd buy a big cheap one.
I've broke three vices. I do alot of metal work, and it's pretty easy to do. If your hard on them, buy a good one. Spend the money. I've also had really good luck with antique vices at flea markets and whatnot. Old blacksmith vices are very durable.
Forged is best, but some of the higher end cast models are really good. The real cheapies (HF) just breake to easy.
