Originally I have an ignition problem with my 96 Aerostar so I tried pushing the cylinder forward to bring on the dash lights which worked and pressing the selanois it spun the starter but did not engage the motor the rod did not push forward no clicking nothing just spinning could there be a safety feature or a bad starter as well?
bad starter, cheap and easy. nothing can cause a starter to not engage but a bad starter. I would disassemble the starter and look, maybe it is bench fixable, replacement is cheap.
you could have a dead battery or with the ignition switched off manually bar the motor over a quarter turn and see if the starter will engage, if it does you've got your weekend cut out for you.
I bet your starter gear shaft is dry. Remove your starter. Lightly oil or grease the shaft the starter gear rides on and you won't have to buy a new one.
