Carb jets

The forum that covers the 462 V4 seems to have gone bye-bye. So I have said my hail marys in hopes that you fellers will not thorw me out of here. This 462 is out of a '67 Lincoln Cont. The question I have concerns the Carter 4bbl carburetor. The carburetor has been rebuilt. I did this because the throttle shafts were in fine shape and thought it worthwhile. The rebuild kit did not come with primary or secondary jets and metering rods. I experience a flooding condition at idle. Studying the primary venturies at idle reveals fuel pouring out instead of a mist. The metering rods are functioning OK. I removed the carb and found that the primary jets have a larger orafice than the secondary. A friend tells me that historically the secondary jets should be larger than the primary. So thinking that the previous owner mistakingly reversed them, And I, being a stupid, durring the rebuild I cleaned them and replaced them where I found them. Well, following my buddies advice, I installed the smaller jets at the primaries. But the engine will not run. I am running out of hail marys.

Carb jets

Hi fuzz, hate to see ya stuck out on a limb. The MEL conference was removed because of the low traffic. Shucks and all that great advice gone down the drain. Anyway, you need to pull the top off that Carter and put the bigger jets in the front and the smaller jets in the rear. Reason is, once the rods are in place they reduce the flow to the proper amount. Since you have the top off, go ahead and recheck your float level and drop. It might be a little too high or else the floats are stuck down. Be sure to bend on the tabs of the float levers and not push on the floats themselves. When you start the engine up again, tap the body of the carburetor lightly with a wooden handle of a hammer just incase the floats or needles are hanging up.

If you’re still having problems, go ahead and post them in the FE conference and I’ll try to help. Just don’t ask me to rehash that Lincoln idle speed adjustment.

Barry

I don't think you should see any fuel originating from the jets at idle. Shouldn't the only necessary fuel be coming from the idle circuit? Perhaps the float is too high.
