What kind of fluid do i need to put in my front and rear diff.?
It is a 96 Ford Explorer 5.0 AWD. I was told I had to put something other that gear grease because of the AWD.
Also on the automatic tranny what kind of fluid goes in the tranny and transfer case?
I want to change all my fuilds and want to know for sure im putting what it calls for. Should i drain my torque converter fluid or just leave it full and drain the tranny fluid? Any info on changing the tranny fluid would be great!
I have a owners manual and a haynes repair manual. The Haynes says mercon V but the owners manual says mercon and thats it. Do i need mercon 2 mercon 3 or mercon v?
also in the haynes manual it doesnt say to drain the torque converter?
it says it holds 5 quarts of transmission fluid according to haynes but my owners manual says 13.2 quarts? Which transmission do i have? its a 96 5.0 AWD not 4x4
ok i figured out which transmission i have its a 4R70W. in the haynes manual it says nothing about flushing the transmission lines going to radiator? how should i go about this?
could i just take both lines off tranny and stick a air hose on one end and blow it out?
also how much transmission fluid do i need to pour in it before i crank it. Arent you suppose to just pour so much in it and then crank it and let it run a few minutes then add more?
and which transmission fluid is for the 4R70W?
THIS VEHICLE MAY BE EQUIPPED WITH MERCON OR
MERCON-V FLUIDS WHICH ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. SERIOUS AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DAMAGE OR TOTAL FAILURE
MAY RESULT IF MERCON AND MERCON-V FLUIDS ARE MIXED.
I read online that an easy way to make sure you are changing out all the fluid is to connect a hose to the transmission fluid intake and put it in a clean bucket filled with fresh fluid (duct tape the hose to the handle of the bucket so it doesn't slip). Put the hose from the transmission into another bucket beside the one with fresh fluid. If you use long enough hoses, you can keep an eye on both buckets while sitting in the driver's seat. Start the engine and watch to make sure you are getting fresh fluid in and old fluid out at the same rate. When the bucket with fresh fluid is almost empty, turn off the engine. Just put a lid on the bucket and take it to the nearest parts store and disgard the old fluid.
it does shift fine but what if the person who had it before me put mercon v in it and i put mercon 3 and have problems? shouldnt i just put the V to make sure everything is ok. it wont hurt to put the V will it?
Thanks i will get 13 quarts of mercon V and change it this weekend. After i change it and reinstall the pan with new gasket and filter do i need to just pour about 12 quarts in it then crank it up and let it fill up the lines, converter, ect? or should i just pour about 9 quarts in it and crank it up? then add till its full?
