ANOTHER BRAKELIGHT/SIGNAL PROBLEM...

Great info on flub 67s brake light problem on 71 F-100 posting. I also have a brake/hazard/turn signal problem on a 79 Bronco; I have parking/clearance lights but no brakes, signals, or hazards. I have checked ground, bulbs, fuse, replaced flasher and checked brake switch at pedal with no luck. I need to trace wiring with a meter (don't have one yet), but I am growing very suspicious of the turn signal/hazard switch. Is it true the brake light signal goes through it? Has anyone had similar problems that were solved by replacing this switch? Where did you get one? Dealer would be big $$$$ I would guess; Kragen/schucks/Autozone/Chief said they didn't carry- Would NAPA have it? What do they cost? Thanks very much in advance,
AL

ANOTHER BRAKELIGHT/SIGNAL PROBLEM...

Obviously my last effort to respond didn't work: sorry about that.

To answer the question, yes, the brake lights do go through the turn signal switch.

The brake light switch output goes up the column to the turn signal switch: when the switch is centered, the brake light switch output is connected to both brake light bulbs. Then when the turn signal switch is moved to either side the appropriate rear bulb is disconnected from the brake light switch and connected to the turn signal flasher output, along with the corresponding front turn signal bulb and dash indicator bulb.

To totally confuse things, the hazard switch does not disconnect the brake light: that's why if everything is working correctly, the two dash bulbs should go solid if you hit the brakes when the hazards are on. The brake light switch in effect "shorts" the hazard flasher by providing 12 volts directly to the output of that flasher.

Since you have already checked everything up to the switch, I would say you are in for replacing the switch. One of the after-market Ford truck parts companies, Auto Craft, or something like that, not only sells the complete switch, but also a repair kit for a lot less money. It's a nuisance to install, but not as bad as threading the wires up and back down the column.

If you do go with the repair kit, make sure that all the wires on the new moving plastic plate stick out as much as the old ones: I learned this the hard way when I wasted several hours troubling shooting what I thought was a further problem, only to ultimately realize that the repair switch was not making contact. I found the part of the instructions saying to bend the wires (which I had evidently overlooked), bent them, and all was well.

Good luck.

ANOTHER BRAKELIGHT/SIGNAL PROBLEM...

Yes the turn signals and brake lights do run through the t/s switch in the column under the horn. I had problems with mine and was unable to find replacement/repair parts and wound up using an aftermarket assembly called a Sigstat 900 from Napa. It cost me $50.00. It's the same same setup as used on big trucks. It's a very simple design and I haven't had one bit of trouble from it. The only thing is there is definitely a front and rear to as far as wiring is concerned.

ANOTHER BRAKELIGHT/SIGNAL PROBLEM...

I would consider the possibility that the bulb socket themselves are bad. When I bought my 79 F150 I had all kinds of strange lighting problems... the long and short of it was that it was solved by replacing 2 bulb sockets. The test light was doing what it should right up to the socket itself. Be observant at auto parts store electrical section, there is more than one Ford style socket... one sticks the bulb into the lense.
