OK guys, I really need some help. I already tried the local library. Does anyone have a vacuum diagram for a '79 F100, straight six? I need it to be the "ABE" diagram. I haven't been able to figure out the thermactor system and EGR. I know for a '79 it's to early to have injection ports in the head, and there's no air feed into the exhaust pipe. Does the air feed into the Cat or exhaust man through the EGR spacer? Does the bypass only dump when evacuated and/or does it use the two signal system? I know my truck didn't use the speed sensor for the EGR. Is the only other option the backpressure EGR? Anyone that has help is greatly appreciated - I need to save my truck from the CA SMOG referee in two months! (the previous owner removed just about everything emission related)
Dont ya just love those Airheads that think they are engineers.
I had trouble with the Smog Referee in Anchorage. They use the California emissions and according to thier diagrams, you must have some stuff the truck didn't come with.
I was able to show him my Factory Manuals, and he agreed with me, but his Law's are his word!
You are just gonna have to raid the junk yards for some stuff and the Ford Dealer for other stuff.
As I recall, they want the EGR under the Carb, A Vacuam port in the side of the Intake Manifold, a good working Chimney, two Vacuam controlled devices in the Air cleaner.
Also, you cant make any of this stuff yourself, or adapt stuff from other vehicles.
What a Paradox. You gotta have what it never came with!
I found the emissions books had a Diagram. They list California, and not California. I think that book was in the Anchorage library, and in Lake Charles LA. I dont know where to point you other than that. but there is a book with emissions for those Old Puffers.
Hoppy
Speed aint all that important, there were Snails on board the Ark, along with the Cheetas!
I'll go to the library tommorow and see what our books have on your engine. I'll need to know if it has California emissions and I'll need your address to mail the copy to you. You can e-mail me at dt1972lr@juno.com with the info and I'll see what I can do.
I dont know where this "Pie In The Sky" idea will lead to but...
The Emissions decal is on the Hood of most Fords.
What if your Hood was lost, or smashed?
The Body shop probably didn't bid on replacing the decal. How does the body shop know if that's the correct decal?
Nope. I think the owner of the car/truck has take the vin number to the parts room at Ford, and get the right Decal.
....and that boys and girls is just what I'd do, if I were in your shoes!
PS. My neighbor had to re-establish the emissions on his 79/F150/300Six and it was a pain!
But when it passed, It ran smooth and got the same milage as my 787F150/300Six that didn't have emissions. About 13-15 Mpg.
It started right away on some very cold mornings too.
You might need a statment from Ford, if they cant provide a decal. The Emissions referee will have serious doubts about a story like "Its too old, Ford doesnt have a Decal for it"
Infants are OK with infancy, but Adults are very careful about Adultry.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help...I've found out that the thermactor injects into the carb spacer..The dealer has told me that they can't help with a VECI decal (ABE)...but I've learned different dealers are more friendlier than others. I'll try pestering. For those of you still helping me in my battle : I bought a replacement Cat converter - it has no designation to "in" and "out" like a muffler. Does it matter that it's not marked ? Does the orientation of the coverter matter ? Reason being I'm almost ready to assume a back pressure transduced EGR is going to be the one out of three EGR's that will fit my truck - yet I have realized that my A/T trans is a "j" rated for CA Emissions, but I can't find any speed indicator on it..hmmm Bye the way, is a 2.75 ratio (rear end) good for mileage?
