fuel problem

Hey all. I have a problem i hope someone can help me with. When i went back to my truck after being parked for hours, a 71 f250 camper special, gas was dripping out of the filler neck. It popped the filler cap half off. This was really weird. I thought someone had syphoned my gas. Did they? Or is my vent clogged? Any ideas?

oh i forgot to mention it was the tank behind the seat.

was it a hot day? and had you just refilled your gas tank? if not either of those then buy a locking gas cap for your truck, I know they make them

My 70 f250 will do the same thing when you have a full tank of gas and its hot out side, or the truck is parked funny. Never had the gas cap blow off though!!!!!! You might consider getting a new cap because I believe that is where the tank vents excess pressure from, maybe that's why it blew off, not venting right?
Good Luck

Hey guys. Just an update. I didn't buy the new cap cause i'm unsure if its safe. I noticed the fuel would come out of the neck without the cap. if i get a tight cap what would happen to the pressure? i don't want the gas tank exploding right behind my seat.

fuel problem

Ed I was first aware of that problem when I was a boy, and with trucks older than 71. If the tank is full or nearly full and is parked with the drivers side lower than the passenger, the sun can warm the cab and draw the gas up and out of the filler neck.

To compensate never fill the trucks tank full is you aren't going to drive out 4-5 gallons of gas, park the truck with the drivers side higher, I have pulled the left rear on top of the curb to get the angle. As far as I know their is no danger of explosion. I have never heard of a behind the seat tank exploding and burning. The rubber between the tank and filler can go bad and you can smell gas inside of the truck. New rubber will stop that.

Follow those guidelines and enjoy your truck.

Your gas tank wont explode, the pressure will vent through your carbs needle and seat, filling the cylinder up with fuel! Been there! You must have a vented cap. Remember, the fuel you fill up with comes from tanks stored under ground, so its about 55-60 degrees when you buy it. Then it heats and expands in the tank and runs down the side of your truck The best fix? Make sure you fill the tank when you know you will be running a gallon or two out before its parked, and park so the filler neck is higher. This allows air to ecape instead of being trapped on the other side of the tank. Ive thought about this alot because Ive had to touch up paint too many times. Theres just no better answer.

These trucks do not vent through the cap, there should be a line that travels down through the frame to the canister filter, which sits near the front passenger's side underneath the radiator core. Check to make sure this is not plugged.

I did a quick look under the engine compartment and couldn't find a charcoal cannister. my truck is a 71 ford f250 with a 360. anyone know if it came with one from the factory this year was it mandated later on? Maybe mine was removed.
