Cap vs Tonneau cover
#1
#2
I towed a 30' conventional (bumper pull) for 13 years with the same truck (F250 w/7.3). Pulled without canopy, with, and with tonneau cover. The canopy was fiberglass and 10" higher than the cab (sloped from top of cab back about 12"). Even though the canpy weighed approx. 200#, I always got the best mileage towing with it installed. It gave me 1- 1.5 mpg over no canopy or tonneau cover. Aerodynamics play a big part in towing. Same truck pulling a 12' high 5th wheel dropped 3 mpg compared to canopy with conventional trailer.
The only thing I found good about the tonneau cover, was keeping things out of sight and basically dry. It was good for about .4 mpg while running solo.
With a canopy you can carry large items, keep them dry, and fairly secure.
Good luck
