Questions about front end work

I'm putting a 3"-drop pitman arm, '78 tie rods and drag link, and a new stabilizer on my '77 F150 4wd next week. I think my steering box is gone, but am unsure of how to tell.
Any advice on how to check?
Supposing its junk, anyone have a good one they like to get rid of?

I've heard a pitman arm is a pain to get off. I've got a good cheater bar to get the nut off with, and a good puller. Other than that huge and expensive socket I need to find, do I need any tricks?

The air pump bearing has recently started to go. New one is a rediculous $250. I'm thinking of taking it off and plugging the holes.
Other than breaking the law, would this have any detramental effects on how the thing runs?

By the way, shes a really clean '77 F150, 4wd, 400, C6, 205, 4.11's with an Auburn in the rear, 3" Rancho Lift, and sitting on 33" MT's. Thanks for any help.
